Caring for Colorado Awards $50,000 for Middle School Program
March 26,2018—Caring for Colorado Foundation, A Health Grantmaker, recently awarded TwoCor $50,000 to adapt its current evidence-informed therapeutic intervention, designed for youth ages 15 to 20 years, to meet the needs of abused, neglected or otherwise traumatized middle school males. The goal of TwoCor’s project is prevention: to improve the resilience and social-emotional health of at-risk, child welfare, and/or juvenile justice involved youth ages 12 to 14 years to keep them in school, out of trouble and living safely at home. TwoCor set three objectives to meet the project goal:
1. TwoCor will work with experts in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and developmental specialists to adapt its current set of interventions for a younger population. Adaptions will assure that experiential and sensory integration activities are developmentally appropriate and build coping skills, and that life skills and social-emotional health lessons are age-appropriate.
2. Staff will be trained and capable of serving middle school youth. The middle school program will be delivered separately from the current program for older youth and all staff must understand the differences in communication styles, processing abilities, therapeutic activities and age-appropriate outcomes.
3. TwoCor’s mobile database will be expanded to accommodate real-time data collection and robust outcome measurements for the new program.
TwoCor anticipates that it will begin serving its middle school clients by early 2019.

TwoCor Doubles Space and Expands Program to Serve Youth
September 1, 2017—Remodeling is completed on the new TwoCor building at 617 Arrawanna Street, next door to the office and workshop at 625 Arrawanna Street. The renovation of the building nearly doubles the space available for TwoCor programs. The building and surrounding property will feature a greenhouse, indoor and outdoor climbing wall, kitchen, art space and multipurpose room for activities such as yoga and Tai Chi.
The additional space increases the number and kinds of on-site, one-on-one Experiential Treatment Activities offered youth at risk for incarceration, chronic unemployment, and homelessness. Change, emotional growth, and personal empowerment are among the benefits of an effective ETA program. ETAs emphasize actions, movements, and activities over more traditional “talk therapy.” Youth are more likely during ETAs to behave in an unguarded and genuine manner. This allows them the opportunity to experience success, identify obstacles, develop improved self-esteem, practice emotional regulation, and take greater responsibility for their actions.
The additional space also increases TwoCor’s capacity to expand and enrich other TwoCor programs. Life Skills Coaches will use the space for homework help, instruction on cooking healthy and economical meals, and other practical skills for when youth emancipate from their homes or the foster care system. Plans to increase the number and populations of youth served at TwoCor may lead to the appropriation of space for new Learning Labs to teach basic job skills and Gathering space for family-style meals, group activities and discussions.

TwoCor Awarded $10,000 by Edson Fund for Greenhouse
July 26, 2017—The Edson Fund, managed by the Pikes Peak Community Foundation, awarded TwoCor $10,000 for the purchase of a greenhouse kit to be assembled outside TwoCor’s newly renovated building at 623 Arrawanna Street. The new building is situated next door to the office and workshop at 625 Arrawanna Street.
The greenhouse enables TwoCor to expand its offering of Experiential Treatment Activities for at-risk youth. Experiential Treatment Activities provide youth, working one-on-one with staff, with opportunities to experience success, identify obstacles, improve self-esteem, and take greater responsibility for their actions. Change, emotional growth and personal empowerment are among the benefits of an effective ETA program.
Many of TwoCor’s youth have experienced severe childhood trauma, such as abuse, neglect and abandonment. This trauma can have a long-term impact on the neurophysiology of the developing brain, resulting in deficits in physical, emotional, cognitive and social development. The greenhouse ETA will include instruction to help offset some of these deficits by focusing, among other things, on health and nutrition, development of fine motor skills, and activities to increase emotional regulation and executive functioning.

TwoCor Named Organization of the Month by Palmer High School's Pay It Forward Club
August 31, 2015—Each month, students in Palmer High School's Pay It Forward club recognize a non-profit organization for their effort in improving the lives of teens in the Pikes Peak Region. The club chose TwoCor as their featured September non-profit. An article featuring TwoCor appears on the club's website. TwoCor programs have served several students from Palmer High School.
Joseph Shelton, a recent graduate of Palmer High School and a founder of the club, recommended TwoCor for the honor. "I went through TwoCor for almost two years and this place made me who I am today," stated Joseph. "When I first started I was stealing, getting in trouble in school, not caring what others say. However from this program I learned about respect and responsibility, I learned that I should not be ashamed of who I am but that I am strong and can make it anywhere. TwoCor does not give up on hope for anyone, they try to help all they can, and if they can't they find someone who will. I am honored to be a TwoCor graduate and I can't wait to see where their teaching will put me in the future."

TwoCor and St. Michael the Archangel Church Win Wildfire Mitigation Award
May 2, 2015--Youth in TwoCor’s community work projects helped to remove dead branches and other combustible materials from the grounds of St. Michael the Archangel Episcopal Church on May 2, National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day. TwoCor and St. Michael the Archangel Episcopal Church in Colorado Springs were recipients of a $500 award for fire mitigation. The 65 winners were selected from a pool of 335 applications spanning 26 states. The Colorado Springs Fire Department initiated the grant application.
The competition was intended to raise wildfire awareness; help protect homes, neighborhoods and entire communities; increase safety for wildland firefighters; and lessen current post-fire impacts. Wild fires have tragically affected families in the St. Michael community, located near where the Waldo Canyon fire struck in the summer of 2012 and destroyed over 18,000 acres and 347 homes.
